Captain’s Report

On an initially sunny and breezy afternoon, Wilcot welcomed Erlestoke to the Old School ground with the hope of reversing the result from earlier in the season. With the Captain having decided to take a holiday this week rather than stay and face the bowling of Elrstoke’s paceman J. Dorgan, it was left to the Vice Captain Mark Oliver to lead the team. Another well prepared Peter Williams wicket looked hard and full of runs and after the toss Wilcot were asked to bowl.
Wilcot took to the field full of purpose and the opening pair of Billy Flippance and Ash Elliot restricted Erlestoke to 9 off the first 4 overs before Ash took the first wicket. More accurate bowling followed and two further wickets from Ash took the score to 31 for 3 off 15 overs, which brought a certain J Dorgan to the wicket who had scored 128 against us earlier in the season. Hugo Stagg and Doug Perrins bowled well to keep Dorgan quiet and a further wicket from Hugo took the score to 44 for 4 off 18 overs. J Dorgan and brother T Dorgan started to time the ball well for Erlestoke and took the score to 118 off 31 before a good catch from Hugo in the deep removed the younger Dorgan. Luke Flippance removed the danger man J Dorgan for 95 with a fine catch in the deep by Oly Lanyon. Oly and Freddy Ulman with some aggressive bowling cleaned up Erlstoke’s remaining batsman both taking 2 wickets and we bowled them out for 217 in the 43rd over. The ground fielding was very impressive from Wilcot’s young side and we were full of confidence walking to tea thinking we would have a good go at this total on a good wicket.

Tea was served in the pavilion with some dark clouds starting to loom over the village. Linda Flippance, having finished chastising the stand in captain for all of the bags and cricket equipment in the pavilion, produced another fantastic tea. As well as favoured prawn, Egg, ham, chicken and cheese sandwiches, a good selection of mini sausages and scotch eggs and some wonderful scones with cream and strawberries were also on offer. There was a surprise offering of Watermelon which went down well.

Well refreshed, Wilcot’s opening pair of Mark Oliver and Mark Windsor took to the field and started brightly, taking the score to 44 off 10 over before Mark W fell for 11 bringing Doug Perrins to the wicket. Some good strokeplay by Doug and Mark kept the run rate up and with the score on 89 for 1 in the 20th over, Wilcot were on track and full of confidence. A light drizzle turned into a heavier rain before Doug  fell in the 21 over and Erlstoke’s captain then threw the ball to their dangerman J Dorgan. Russ went without scoring leaving the score at 91 for 3, bringing new man Freddy Ulman to join his Captain. Some tight bowling from Erlsetoke slowed the run rate and Wilcot lost some much needed momentum. Freddy played some well timed shots before falling for 20 with the score on 145. Mark followed shortly after for 85 quickly followed by Hugo Mayes, Hugo Stagg and Oly Lanyon. Billy and Luke Flippance batted well and needed 40 off the last 4 overs and despite some fine shots could not get us over the line with Wilcot finishing on 203 for 9 off 45 overs.
