Festival Report – Steeple Langford – 27th July

A great day was enjoyed by all at the Steeple Langford Festival of cricket on 27 Jul 2014. Our fantastic squad consisting of a bear 8 players worked magnificently well as a team in the blistering sunshine. The squad consisted of Hugh Marshall, Hugo Pike, Felix Pike, Josh Kneale, Charlie Ricketts, Ralph Ricketts, William Barnard & Izzy Barnard.

Match 1 – Steeple Langford – Wilcot won by 4 runs

First up saw the team play hosts Steeple Langford. With Wilcot in the field first it was clear that Steeple Langford were up for the challenge and set a fantastic target with some great batting however would the 3 wickets taken by Wilcot prove crucial? 251 had been set and our team responded magnificently with some fantastic batting, special mention to Felix Pike for a fantastic 4 on what was a very long boundary. In a tense finish it went down to the wire but Wilcot managed to get over the line, winning by just four runs. A great start to the festival.

Match 2 – Heytesbury – Wilcot won by 2 runs

Game two continued in the same manner and our players inspired by the earlier victory. Heytesbury were next up on what seemed to be an even bigger pitch! Once again Wilcot were in the field first and even though there was some outstanding bowling from our players Heynesbury managed to run up another good total thanks to some very impressive singles and doubles being run. Another total over 250 to beat for our batters but it seemed that our players had learnt from the running of Heynesbury. Thanks to the large pitch our batters found the spaces and made a number of great singles and doubles with some outstanding running. The communication between the pairs was excellent but the inventive reverse sweep from Hugh Marshall, for a boundary, was most impressive. The result of this match really did go down to the last ball and with another good running display the double from Hugh Marshall and Ralph Ricketts took victory by just two runs.

Match 3 – Shrewton – Wilcot won by 2 runs

The last match on what was an energy sapping day saw us up against Shrewton. Once more Wilcot were in the field first and although our bowling was very good Shrewton managed to notch up a total of 252. There was some fantastic bowling from Charlie Ricketts but the cheeky stumping (a la Sri Lanka v England!) while bowling from Hugh Marshall provided much amusement for the umpires and parents spectating. With the third 250+ total to beat Wilcot were sent into bat. Continuing on from the previous match the running was frantic, even suicidal at times! Hugo Pike and William Barnard made the most of the batting capitalising well on the oppositions mistakes in the field. For the first time this match was slightly more comfortable with Wilcot running out winners by 12 runs, a fantastic total. The entire squad should be congratulated for their efforts and specifically their enthusiasm throughout the day.

Being in the field first seemed to play into our favour on the day but the high standard of the pitches also helped to produce some close matches and high scoring totals. A huge thank you and well done must go to the organisers and ground staff at Steeple Langford for putting together a great event as well as presenting three immaculate pitches for the juniors.

Thanks also to all the parents for their support and special thanks to Tom Pike for being our coach for the day as well as Chris Barnard for scoring. All the players did a GREAT JOB and should be very proud of their performance.

Well done to all and lets keep it going into the next festival!!!

‘Nearly New’ Box

Dear all

Just a reminder that our ‘Nearly New’ box of cricket items is now up and running, and already being used which is terrific.  There are already cricket jumpers, trousers, shoes…in a range of sizes.

It will always be on the table by the main gate, so please do take a look – especially if your child just needs a spare cricket something or other.

The principle is nice and easy.

If you have any cricket items that are of reasonable quality, and that your child has either grown out of, or no longer uses, and you would like to donate them to raise funds for Wilcot Juniors, then please put them into the box at any time.

Then, for a small voluntary donation, any parent is welcome to take items from the box at any time, and all the proceeds will be used for Wilcot Juniors.

Many thanks in anticipation for your support by either putting items in or taking them out!

Also, we still have a few Wilcot cricket caps available at £12 each or £20 for 2 siblings, so please let me know if you would like any – first come first served for the remaining stock I’m afraid.

See you at the weekend and fingers crossed for more good weather

6th June 2014 – Waitrose Green Token Scheme Update

I have just received notification from Waitrose that their Community Matters Green Token Scheme for May has just ended and that they raised £230 for Wilcot Cricket Club Junior Section.

This is great news and although we up against a fantastic cause – ‘The Marlborough & District Dyslexia Association’, who ran it away with it towards the end of the month, it was still a brilliant achievement for the Junior Section.

As previously mentioned, these funds will go towards extra kit for the Juniors in the coming weeks and months.

I have sent a letter of thanks to Waitrose on your behalf, but please, if you are in the Marlborough store in the near future please say a big ‘thank you’ to Janice who runs the Green Token Community Scheme.

Many thanks

Ged

4th June 2014 – Wilcot Juniors – ‘Nearly New Box’

Starting from this weekend, we will have a ‘Nearly New’ box of cricket items, that may be of interest to you.

We have already been given a few items to start the box off, so as mentioned, it will be at Training on Saturdays starting this weekend.

Many thanks in anticipation for your support by either putting items in or taking them out!

29th May 2014 – Junior Sponsorship Agreed

Hamptons International have kindly agreed to sponsor the Junior shirts for the 2014 Season

25th May 2014 – Waitrose green token scheme – great news that Wilcot Junior Section will benefit from being one of the 3 options in May 2014

Great news!!

Wilcot CC Junior Section has been selected to be included the next Waitrose Green Token scheme (Marlborough Branch) which will run from the 1st May 2014

How does it work?

At the checkout each customer receives a Green Token, which they then place in the box of the good cause they would most like to support. The more tokens a cause gets, the bigger the donation they receive.

Every month the branch donates £1000 between three local good causes. In simple terms, the more tokens a good cause receives the greater the proportion of the £1000 it will receive.

How the money will be spent: All funds received will be spent on the Youth Section, providing essential kit and training equipment for the Juniors.

So please tell all your friends and family to shop at Waitrose Marlborough during the month of May and put that green token in the ‘Wilcot CC Pot’ and remember it starts on tomorrow!!

20th May 2014 – Extra Coaching for U11s

I have managed to secure the services of Sahan Wijerathne to provide some extra coaching for our U11 players during the month of June.

Sahan is currently Potterne’s overseas player for this season, he has played for Sri Lanka at U19 level and the full A Team. He is an excellent coach and has a great rapport with children. He is a fully certified ECB Level 3 Coach who specialises in Batting / Bowling / Wicket Keeping.

He is available to come to Wilcot CC and run U11 sessions from 4.30 – 5.30pm on Monday 2nd June / Monday 9th June / Monday 16th June / Monday 23rd June / Monday 30th June.

I know the timing may not be good for everybody, but it would be good to know if this is of interest – depending on numbers, I suspect the contribution to the cost of this would be approx £15-£20 per player for all 5 sessions.
