Match report –

A game that Wilcot’s faithful will probably want to forget!

With the Skipper running a little late, the toss was completed prior to arrival which Wilcot won and elected to bat. Unfortunately, it was downhill from there.

Tim Holme was put into bat with Mark Warburg.   Two in-form bats neither of whom managed to get into double figures.  Jonathan Evans steadied the ship, making it to double figures and then was caught at mid-on.   Both Konrad and Andrew Marshall went in and came back out again.  James Cox was looking good until the Skipper ran him out (who was then bowled for a duck!).  Jack Cox was bowled for a golden and as the innings came crashing to an end, Josh Evans was the only one to offer any resistance, making a quick fire 14 offering a sliver of respectability to a score of 67 after only 16 overs.

A quick change over and Wilcot took to the field knowing that they’d need to be on their A-game to defend such a low total.

Clearly used to the tricky wicket, Collingbourne’s openers got off to a flyer as Andy Smith and Olly Scott Harden struggled to contain them (17 after 2).   Both bowlers then found a better line and length and the run rate dried up (25 after 6).  Perhaps a result of economical bowling from both ends but Andy was rewarded with the first wicket in the 7th….well deserved after some very tidy bowling and Wilcot sensed a glimmer of hope (28-1).

A bowling change introduced Josh Evans and Jack Cox into the frame and Josh took a wicket in comical fashion in his first over.  As Josh approached the crease to bowl, new batsman Pike, took position, Joe Root like for a pre-meditated reverse scoop.   All looked very Joe Root like for a split second…..until he lost his balance and fell over….at which point Josh’s full toss clattered into his middle stump (44-2 from 9).

Sadly, the mirth caused from this dismissal seemed to be more of a distraction to the fielding side as Collingbourne knocked off the remaining runs in the following 3 overs.   The only consolation was one more wicket taken by Jack Cox.

Whether revenge for the drubbing that we dished out to Collingbourne two years previously at the same ground or the disruption caused by the change in T20 Skipper, this is a game that Wilcot will want to forget.

It was clear that Collingbourne were fielding a very different side to that which Wilcot usually face on a Sunday and the uneven bounce from the pitch made batting very difficult.   However, Wilcot gave plenty of their wickets away and ultimately, 67 is still way short of what would be considered a par score…..even on such a pitch.

Having said all of this, big congratulations to Josh Evans who, with the bat, hit not only his personal top score for Wilcot but that of the innings and in addition, managed to induce a moment of comedic genius with the ball.

Wilcot’s T20 Skip returns to duties for the next midweek fixture (away at Pinewood – Wed 28th June) which will undoubtedly improve Wilcot’s fortunes.
